James Walters was the son of Albert and Alice Walters of 1, 19 Bank Street, Brierley Hill. He enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment but was transferred to the Suffolks. He served in the 2nd Battalion in the 3rd Division. This was a highly regarded Division which fought in almost battlefield on the Western Front. At the end of 1917 the Suffolks were at Cambrai and in the 1918 German Spring offensives they fought at St Quentin on the 21st March and at Estaires in April in the Battle of the Lys. They returned to the front line for the Advance to Victory and were in the Battle of the Canal du Nord on the 29th September, followed by the Battle of Cambrai. Private James Walters was killed in action at Cambrai and is buried in Forenville Military Cemetery (H 7). He was 34 years of age and is commemorated on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
