WHITMORE, George

Worcestershire. 22 March 1922

George Whitmore volunteered for the Worcesters and joined the 9th (Service) Battalion. They were sent to Gallipoli in August 1915 to reinforce the troops who had been there since April and landed without much opposition. The Turkish forces, however, proved a brave enemy and the next five months were grim in the extreme. In January the troops left Gallipoli and went to Mesopotamia where they remained for the duration. Private George Whitmore was injured at some point and discharged. He returned to Dudley but it seems that his problems remained and he died on the 22 March 1922.He was 25 years of age and is buried in Dudley Cemetery nd commemorated on the Dudley Memorial.
