WOOD, Albert Edward

South Staffordshire. 04 October 1917

Albert Wood was born in Brierley Hill and volunteered for the South Staffords. He served in the 7th Battalion which was sent to Gallipoli in the attempt to capture the peninsula in 1915. After the evacuation they returned to take their place on the Western Front. In Spring 1917 they fought at Messines and from the 31st July they were involved in the Third Battle of Ypres. They attacked successfully on the Steenbeke in August and near Poelcappelle in September. On the 4th October another attack was seriously held up by the German defence and the battalion suffered 250 casualties. Among those killed in action was Private Albert Wood. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial and on the Brierley Hill and Brierley Hill church Memorials.
