Field Lane, Stourbridge, DY8 2JQ, DY8 2JQ
The Old Swinford C of E School War Memorial is of the usual Worcestershire County Council design. It is constructed of oak and consists of a rectangular board mounted on the wall of the school’s assembly hall. The names are arranged in three panels edged with beading. Above the central panel is a carved representation of the county’s arms and immediately below is the inscription:
OLDSWINFORD C OF E SCHOOL
1914 FORMER SCHOLARS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1918
Two of the 48 names have not been identified from the usual sources and a further five are not commemorated on the Stourbridge Borough Memorial. All the men served in the army and most in the local infantry regiments. The men died in many foreign fields, including distant Alexandria, Baghdad, Basra and Gallipoli, but most died on the Western Front in France and Belgium. One wounded man died in a prisoner of war camp in Germany. Their ages, as far as they were recorded, ranged from 18 to 35 (7 from 18 to 20, 11 from 21 to 25, 11 from 26 to 30, and 10 from 31 to 35). There were several pairs of brothers, including the Adams brothers of Hall Street who died on the same day in the Third Battle of Ypres some five miles apart. Underneath the names is the inscription:
AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM
